Jackie Pick is a former teacher and current writer living in the Chicago area. She is a contributing author to multiple anthologies, including Multiples Illuminated, So Glad They Told Me: Women Get Real about Motherhood, Here in the Middle, as well as the and the literary magazines The Sun and Selfish. She received Honorable Mention from the Mark Twain House and Museum for her entry in the Royal Nonesuch Humor Writing Competition. Jackie is a contributing writer at Humor Outcasts, and her essays have been featured on various online sites including McSweeney's, Belladonna Comedy, Mamalode, The HerStories Project, and Scary Mommy. Superstars!

Strap on your parachutes, friends, we’re almost at the end of the year. I think I like measuring my year in books, which presents a much more pleasing picture of my 2023 than if I measured it by the number of vats of butter cookies I consumed. Here are the books I read in November that were worth finishing.

The few I’m jazzed enough to discuss? They are all about the heart, emotional landscapes, and their exploration and enrichment.

How the Book is Coming (Giddyup Rampage Edition)

“How’s the book coming?” asks no one, because let’s face it, the world’s too busy spinning off its axis for this to be anyone’s big concern at the moment. Also, folks may fear the question would be met with gnashing of teeth, rending of garments, and technicolor expletives.

Understandable.

But hey, surprise, it’s going fairly freakin’ well. Tomorrow I cannonball into the final round of revisions, loaded with an arsenal of edits and fix-em-ups. Revisions will be followed immediately by final edits to make sure my commas are behaving and my participles are tucked in with hospital corners.

Bathmats, Delight Quests, and Birthday Musings

Today is my birthday (whoo!) 

Birthdays deserve their own red carpet moment. A custom-tailored, roll-out-the-velvet deal. How you spin your red carpet bash, though, that’s your business. Could be low-key. Maybe just you standing on a weirdly fuzzy bathmat, toothbrush in hand, pondering the mysterious ways of your face. Or maybe you’re gunning for the full-blown Academy Awards spectacle. Sure, it might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but who cares? Your birthday, your rules. Unleash the madness, deck out in whatever zany, glitter-bomb gown or suit you want.
